'Sandown Park Racecourse' Tensile Fabric Canopies Project

The canopies package were a part of a multi million sterling refurbishment program at the horse racing track, where not only external works were undertaken; but also a major internal works package, involving skilled staff in electrical, mechanical, and structural trades. As part of the refurbishment program, two areas were selected by the client and architect for covering with tensile membranes (a) Eclipse Pavilion - a 32 metre long x 4 metre projection multi bay cantilevered canopy covering a 3rd floor balcony (b) Parade Ring - a 96 metre long x 13 metre span multi bay conic shaped canopy.

The client's brief was to have every canopy module sectional, so that easy replacements could be performed without having to replace the entire canopy. The Parade Ring canopy, once installed gives the appearance of being a single canopy; how ever it is made up of eight identical membranes, with valley connection membranes clamped to the catenary edges in the latitudinal directions.

Design Loads : The structures were designed to withstand a snow load of 1.0 kN/sq.m (21 lbf/sq.ft) and a wind load of 0.7 kN/sq.m (14.6 lbf/sq.ft).

Steel Structure : All structural steelwork was manufactured using Grade 50 mild steel, treated and finished with White top coat. The largest member size was 193mm (7.6") dia. with a thickness of 10mm (0.4"). Cables were all stainless steel with the largest size being 19mm (0.75") dia.

Fabric Membrane : All fabric was PVC Coated Polyester, provided by Verseidag Indutex GmbH of Krefeld, Germany. The Eclipse canopy was built using a Type 2 (900 g/sq.m - 27 oz/sq.yd) Structural Grade with a PVDF lacquering. The larger Parade Ring structure used a Type 3 (1050 g/sq.m - 31 oz/sq.yd) Structural Grade with a PVDF lacquering. A full 10 Year Warranty has also been provided to the client.

Installation : The majority of the installation was carried out by specialist aerial riggers, who are I.R.A.T.A qualified to work at height, using abseiling equipment. The height of the peak on the Parade Ring Canopy was 13 metres (42' 8"). 60 Tonne capacity cranes were used to lift in the 55 tonnes of structural steel and 5 tonnes of fabric membrane.
