'Hertfordshire Constabulary Headquaters, U.K - Entrance Canopy Structure'
Description of Project
J & J. Carter Ltd were commissioned by the client to design and build a new canopy to the original scheme as designed by Sutton Griffiths. The new canopy has been built using a welded steel frame work, with stainless steel tension cables and a White PVDF lacquered PVC fabric. The fabric has a 10 Year Pro-Rata warranty by Ferrari Textiles.
Why was it Manufactured?
The Constabulary required a entrance canopy with a design statement. With the entire site going through an uplift, this canopy was procured to provide a covered ramp for disabled access as well a feature.
The architect provided the basic scheme design, and it was the design and engineering of J & J. Carter that realised a challenging structure.
Where is it Located?
Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, U.K
What is unique about the structure and/or what technical difficulties were overcome to make it a reality?
The location of the structure was road-side, meant that access would always be difficult, and our access equipment could not interrupt the traffic.
The form of the canopy is somewhat hybrid, in that we have combined the conic and the barrel vault forms, which resulted in higher fabric stresses towards the centre of the membrane. The design loads were 0.4 kN/m2 for snow and 0.55 kN/m2 for wind.
There were no plans supplied to work from, therefore we undertook a 3D Laser Survey, to ensure that the new canopy structure would blend in with the existing building and avoid any underlying services.
How did the project achieve the clients needs?
J & J. Carter Ltd acted as Main Contractor for the customer, and completed the project before the due date and within budget. The new membrane has a design life of 15 to 18 years. The PVDF/PVC/PES membrane also has a 10 Year Warranty, this being one of J & J. Carters standard features.
