Description of Project
Design and Build contract for a Tensile Fabric Canopy covering an outdoor eating area.
Why was it Manufactured?
On Tuesday 29 March 2005 an announcement was made at Cricklade College by Test Valley Borough Council, Hampshire County Council and the College concerning the creation of a multi-use community and cultural centre on the site of the former Cricklade Theatre
Test Valley Borough Council has re-developed the old Cricklade Theatre building in Andover into an exciting new arts and entertainment venue.
Due to open later in 2006 the venue will be called The Lights. The original 1970s college building will be transformed with the use of lights, canopies and natural light to feature a new arena hall, bar and cafe area, function rooms, meeting rooms, dance studio and refitted auditorium.

What is unique about the structure and/or what technical difficulties were overcome to make it a reality ?
The canopy had to interface with an existing building, which could not resist the canopy loads. Our engineers had to provide reaction forces so the Main Contractor’s engineers could add bracing to the building.
We also had to connect to a steel feature tower which required additional bracing.
How did the project achieve the client’s needs?
J & J. Carter Ltd acted as a specialist contractor to Test Valley Borough Council for the customer. The new membrane has a design life of approximately 15 years and the steel frame in excess of 30 years.
We have built a sustainable membrane canopy. The PVC Polyester roof can be recycled at the Texyloop facility in Italy. The recycled PVC will be used to make products such as garden furniture or packaging.
